ABSTRACT

Introduction: SARS-CoV-2 mainly affects the respiratory system, but the damage caused by this virus also extends to other systems, including the nervous system, and the mechanisms of neurological infection can be direct or indirect. Objective(s): To determine the relationship between neurological manifestations and disease severity in symptomatic COVID-19 positive patients at San Vicente de Paul Hospital in 2021. Material(s) and Method(s): A cross-sectional observational study was conducted using medical records of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 and neurological manifestations, which were classified into manifestations of the central nervous system and manifestations of the peripheral nervous system. Result(s): The results show that 74,1 % of patients presented neurological manifestations;the highest percentage was concentrated in patients who developed severe disease (15 [60 %], CNS;91 [77,1 %], PNS;125 [65,4 %], CNS and PNS). The joint presence of central and peripheral neurological manifestations was significantly associated with critical COVID-19 (P value= 0,011;OR: 2,005). The mortality rate reached 2,69 %. Conclusion(s): Neurological manifestations in hospitalized COVID-19 patients are very common, and critical COVID-19 is more likely to have neurological manifestations.Copyright © 2022 Universidad de Ciencias Medicas de La Hab. ABSTRACT

The occurrence of neurological manifestations and complications in pregnant women compared to non-pregnant women with COVID-19 is unclear. This cross-sectional study included women aged over 18 years hospitalized with SARS-CoV-2 infection confirmed by RT-PCR from March to June 2020 in Recife, Brazil. We evaluated 360 women, including 82 pregnant patients who were significantly younger (27.5 vs. 53.6 years; p < 0.01) and less frequently obese (2.4% vs. 15.1%; p < 0.01) than the non-pregnant group. All pregnancies were confirmed using ultrasound imaging. Abdominal pain was the only more frequent COVID-19 manifestation during pregnancy (23.2% vs. 6.8%; p < 0.01), but was not associated with the outcomes. Almost half the pregnant women presented neurological manifestations, including anosmia (31.7%), headache (25.6%), ageusia (17.1%), and fatigue (12.2%). However, neurological manifestations occurred similarly in pregnant and non-pregnant women. Four (4.9%) pregnant women and 64 non-pregnant women (23%) presented delirium, but the frequency with age-adjustment was similar in the non-pregnant group. Pregnant women with COVID and preeclampsia (19.5%) or eclampsia (3.7%) were older (31.8 vs. 26.5 years; p < 0.01), and epileptic seizures occurred more often in association with eclampsia (18.8% vs. 1.5%; p < 0.01) regardless of previous epilepsy. There were three maternal deaths (3.7%), one dead fetus, and one miscarriage. The overall prognosis was good. There was no difference in prolonged hospital stay, the need for ICU and mechanical ventilation, or death when comparing pregnant and non-pregnant women.

Introduction: Poor sleep quality have been widely reported in patients with long COVID. Determining the characteristics, type, severity, and relationship of long COVID with other neurological symptoms is essential for the prognosis and management of poor sleep quality. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at a public university in the eastern Amazon region of Brazil between November 2020 and October 2022. The study involved 288 patients with long COVID with self-report neurological symptoms. One hundred thirty-one patients were evaluated by using standardised protocols: Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), Beck Anxiety Inventory, Chemosensory Clinical Research Center (CCRC), and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). This study aimed to describe the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of patients with long COVID with poor sleep quality and their relationship with other neurological symptoms (anxiety, cognitive impairment, and olfactory disorder). Results: Patients with poor sleep quality were mainly women (76.3%), 44.04 ± 12.73 years old, with >12 years of education (93.1%), and had monthly incomes of up to US $240.00 (54.2%). Anxiety and olfactory disorder were more common in patients with poor sleep quality. Discussion: Multivariate analysis shows that the prevalence of poor sleep quality was higher in patients with anxiety, and olfactory disorder is associated with poor sleep quality. In this cohort of patients with long COVID, the prevalence of poor sleep quality was highest in the group tested by PSQI and were associated with other neurological symptoms, such as anxiety and olfactory dysfunction. A previous study indicates a significant association between poor sleep quality and psychological disorders over time. Recent studies involving neuroimaging found functional and structural changes in Long COVID patients with persistent olfactory disfunction. Poor sleep quality are integral part of complex changes related to Long COVID and should be part of patient's clinical management.

ABSTRACT

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been extensive studies from all over the world reporting on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-associated neurological syndromes. Although initially thought of as primarily a respiratory pathogen, it became increasingly clear that the virus does have other systemic manifestations, including on the neurological system. Since then, the discovery of the many neuroimaging features of COVID-19-associated neurological syndromes have puzzled researchers and physicians in terms of interpretation, and how best to manage these findings to benefit patients. We sought to review the neuroimaging findings of COVID-19-associated neurological syndromes, particularly the vessel wall imaging (VWI) features, in the hope of finding a common feature that would better guide physicians in terms of further management of this group of patients. We will also look into the potential pitfalls of interpreting the VWI findings in these patients.

Introduction: Articles published in the literature report neurological manifestations or "complications" of SARS-CoV-2 infection and conclude that the different neurological manifestations are relatively similar, but with different frequencies. This study aimed to determine the frequency of neurological manifestations of COVID-19 and to identify which are associated with mortality. Method(s): We performed a retrospective study of all patients diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection by RT-PCR at Hospital 1degree de Octubre, in Mexico, from the beginning of the pandemic to 22 December 2020. A total of 561 patients were identified, 370 of whom presented neurological manifestations. Result(s): The global mortality rate was 37.8% (140/370), increasing to 92.4% among intubated patients (135/146). Of the 370 patients included, approximately 20% of neurological symptoms (headache, neurological impairment, anosmia, ageusia) accounted for 80% of cases of neurological manifestations. Conclusion(s): At our hospital, 80% of the patients with neurological manifestations of COVID-19 presented headache, neurological impairment, ageusia, and/or anosmia. Neurological impairment at admission or before arriving at hospital was identified as a risk factor for mortality.Copyright © 2021 Sociedad Espanola de Neurologia

ABSTRACT

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has killed millions of people around the world so far and has turned into a disaster for people and healthcare systems. Neurological problems are often seen in people with COVID-19 in the general population, but it is unclear how common they are in pregnant women. This study provides a summary of studies on pregnant women with proven SARS-CoV-2 infection and a particular neurologic diagnosis from different parts of the world. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 15 papers were assessed to create this review article. Based on our findings, the peripheral and central nervous systems were both equally impacted: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS, n=1), bifacial weakness, paresthesia, and vestibulocochlear neuritis (n=1), eclampsia types (n=2), and neurological disease (n=2); case reports, retrospective studies, editorials, and prospective observational studies were included. The median gestational age was 34 (30-36.5) weeks, and the median maternal age was 32.5 (25-35) years. Given the number of reports of neurologic problems associated with COVID-19 in the general community, our findings might be overstated, and we chose the ones that fit our criteria. We hope that this review helps in the early detection and management of neurological diseases during pregnancy.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To compare the clinical profile and short-term outcome of children admitted with acute SARS-CoV-2 infection during the first and second waves of the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19). METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted in a tertiary care setting. A retrospective medical record review of all pediatric patients admitted with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection between March 2020 and September 2021 was conducted. Patients' demographic data, pre-existing comorbidities, mode of presentation, and clinical course in the hospital were noted. The outcome measures were in-hospital mortality, need for intensive care, and invasive mechanical ventilation, duration of ICU, and hospital stay. RESULTS: One thousand and twenty-four children were recruited, 592 of the first wave and 432 of the second wave. In the second wave, more children were admitted with respiratory distress (OR = 3.38) and neurological manifestations (OR = 4.61). There was a higher requirement of intensive care (OR = 4.2) and invasive mechanical ventilation (OR = 4.17). In-hospital mortality of the second wave was also increased (1.4% vs. 0.1%), but the difference was not statistically significant. Children with neurological comorbidities (OR = 8.73), malnutrition (OR = 3.01), and preterm babies (OR = 6.8) were associated with severe COVID. CONCLUSION: The clinical profile of the second wave of COVID-19 in children was different from the first wave, with more respiratory distress and neurological manifestations at presentation. In the second wave, a significant increase in the incidence of severe infections requiring ICU care was observed.

ABSTRACT

The 2019 novel Corona Virus pandemic beginning from Wuhan, China primarily affects the respiratory tract but its has impacted clinical practice across a range of specialities including neurology. We review the bearing of the 2019 NCoV infection on neurological practice. Neurological manifestations are less common than respiratory manifestations, yet conspicuous, affecting nearly over a third of hospitalized individuals. These may be classified in to early – headache, dizziness, hyposmia and hypogeusia and late – encephalopathy. Rarely but surely, a very small proportion of infected individuals might present with stroke. Certain neurological conditions, including cerebrovascular disease in both China and Italy and dementia in Italy predispose to infection and more severe manifestations, requiring intensive care unit admission. There is no convincing evidence that the manifestations, course and outcome of various neurological disorders is impacted by 2019 nCoV infection. Concerns of an increased risk of febrile seizures offset by a reduced frequency of infection in the paediatric age group. Individuals with multiple sclerosis might potentially experience both true and pseudorelapses. Besides a direct effect, 2019 nCoV has tremendously affected neurological care by disrupting the continuity of care and the availability of neurological medicines worldwide. Neurologists should respond to this challenge by developing and sustaining innovative methods of providing care as well as alerting the society at large to adopt measures to contain the spread of 2019 nCoV.

ABSTRACT

SARS-CoV-2 is a single-stranded RNA virus that belongs to the group of seven coronaviruses that affect humans, and its infection causes the COVID-19 disease. The association between the COVID-19 condition and risk factors of neurological manifestations is unclear to date. This review aims to update the main neurological manifestations associated with SARS-CoV-2 disease. First, we present the hypothesis of the neuroinvasion mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2. Then, we discuss the possible symptoms related to patients with COVID-19 infection in the central and peripheral nervous systems, followed by the perspectives of diagnosis and treatment of possible neurological manifesta-tions. The hypothesis of the neuroinvasion mechanism includes direct routes, as the virus crosses the blood-brain barrier or the ACE2 receptor pathway role, and indirect pathways, such as malfunctions of the immune system and vascular system dysregulation. Various studies report COVID-19 consequences, such as neuroanatomic alterations and cognitive impairment, besides peripheral condi-tions, such as anosmia, ageusia, and Guillain Barre Syndrome. However, the het-erogeneity of the studies about neurologic damage in patients after COVID-19 infection precludes any generalization of current findings. Finally, new studies are necessary to understand the adequate diagnosis, therapeutic method of early treatment, and risk group of patients for neurological manifestations of COVID-19 post-infection.Copyright © 2023, Instituto de Investigaciones Clinicas. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence showed that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection may present with neurological manifestations. This review aimed to determine the neurological manifestations and complications in COVID-19. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis that included cohort and case series/reports involving a population of patients confirmed with COVID-19 infection and their neurologic manifestations. We searched the following electronic databases until April 18, 2020: PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and World Health Organization database (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42020180658). RESULTS: From 403 articles identified, 49 studies involving a total of 6,335 confirmed COVID-19 cases were included. The random-effects modeling analysis for each neurological symptom showed the following proportional point estimates with 95% confidence intervals: "headache" (0.12; 0.10-0.14; I2 = 77%), "dizziness" (0.08; 0.05-0.12; I2 = 82%), "headache and dizziness" (0.09; 0.06-0.13; I2 = 0%), "nausea" (0.07; 0.04-0.11; I2 = 79%), "vomiting" (0.05; 0.03-0.08; I2 = 74%), "nausea and vomiting" (0.06; 0.03-0.11; I2 = 83%), "confusion" (0.05; 0.02-0.14; I2 = 86%), and "myalgia" (0.21; 0.18-0.25; I2 = 85%). The most common neurological complication associated with COVID-19 infection was vascular disorders (n = 23); other associated conditions were encephalopathy (n = 3), encephalitis (n = 1), oculomotor nerve palsy (n = 1), isolated sudden-onset anosmia (n = 1), Guillain-Barré syndrome (n = 1), and Miller-Fisher syndrome (n = 2). Most patients with neurological complications survived (n = 14); a considerable number of patients died (n = 7); and the rest had unclear outcomes (n = 12). CONCLUSION: This review revealed that neurologic involvement may manifest in COVID-19 infection. What has initially been thought of as a primarily respiratory illness has evolved into a wide-ranging multi-organ disease.

ABSTRACT

The development of long-term symptoms of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) more than four weeks after primary infection, termed "long COVID" or post-acute sequela of COVID-19 (PASC), can implicate persistent neurological complications in up to one third of patients and present as fatigue, "brain fog", headaches, cognitive impairment, dysautonomia, neuropsychiatric symptoms, anosmia, hypogeusia, and peripheral neuropathy. Pathogenic mechanisms of these symptoms of long COVID remain largely unclear; however, several hypotheses implicate both nervous system and systemic pathogenic mechanisms such as SARS-CoV2 viral persistence and neuroinvasion, abnormal immunological response, autoimmunity, coagulopathies, and endotheliopathy. Outside of the CNS, SARS-CoV-2 can invade the support and stem cells of the olfactory epithelium leading to persistent alterations to olfactory function. SARS-CoV-2 infection may induce abnormalities in innate and adaptive immunity including monocyte expansion, T-cell exhaustion, and prolonged cytokine release, which may cause neuroinflammatory responses and microglia activation, white matter abnormalities, and microvascular changes. Additionally, microvascular clot formation can occlude capillaries and endotheliopathy, due to SARS-CoV-2 protease activity and complement activation, can contribute to hypoxic neuronal injury and blood-brain barrier dysfunction, respectively. Current therapeutics target pathological mechanisms by employing antivirals, decreasing inflammation, and promoting olfactory epithelium regeneration. Thus, from laboratory evidence and clinical trials in the literature, we sought to synthesize the pathophysiological pathways underlying neurological symptoms of long COVID and potential therapeutics.

BACKGROUND: Concerns regarding potential neurologic complications of COVID-19 are being increasingly reported worldwide. Our objective was to investigate the neurologic complications of COVID-19 among a cohort of Lebanese patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection admitted to Rafik Hariri University Hospital (RHUH), the leading COVID-19 testing and treatment center in Lebanon. METHODS: This is a retrospective, single-center, observational study conducted from March to July 2020 at RHUH, Lebanon. RESULTS: Of 169 hospitalized patients with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection (mean {SD} age was 45.75 {19} years and 62.7% were men), 91 patients (53.8%) had severe infection and 78 patients (46.2%) had non-severe infection according to the American Thoracic Society guidelines for community-acquired pneumonia. Overall, 112 patients (66.3%) developed neurologic symptoms: CNS (46.1%), PNS (43.7%), and skeletal muscle injury (2.4%). Compared with patients with non-severe infection, patients with severe infection were significantly older, were male and more likely to have underlying disorders, especially diabetes and cardiac or cerebrovascular disease. Moreover, those patients experienced more typical COVID-19 symptoms at onset of illness such as fever, cough and fatigue. However, there was no significant difference in the frequency of all nervous system manifestations between the severe and the non-severe infection groups (57 {62.6%} vs 55 {70.5%}; p =0.316), except for impaired consciousness, where seven patients had impaired consciousness in the severe group compared to none in the non-severe group (p=0.012). CONCLUSION: A wide variety of neurologic symptoms were detected in our Lebanese cohort of hospitalized COVID-19 patients. A comprehensive knowledge of the neurologic manifestations will help healthcare providers to be more attentive to these complications.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Discrepancies exist regarding the clinical course and prognostic factors for post-COVID fatigue. Therefore, our aim was to assess the timely course of fatigue and its possible predictors in patients previously hospitalised due to SARS-CoV-2 infection. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients and employees of the University Hospital in Krakow were assessed with the use of a validated neuropsychological questionnaire. Included were participants aged 18 or more, previously hospitalised due to COVID-19, who completed questionnaires only once > 3 months after the onset of infection. Individuals were retrospectively asked about the presence of eight symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome at four timepoints: before COVID-19, within 0-4 weeks, 4-12 weeks, and > 12 weeks post-infection. RESULTS: We enrolled 204 patients [40.2% women, median age 58 (46-66) years] evaluated after a median of 187 (156-220) days from the first positive nasal swab test for SARS-CoV-2. The most common comorbidities were hypertension (44.61%), obesity (36.27%), smoking (28.43%), and hypercholesterolemia (21.08%); none of the patients required mechanical ventilation during hospitalisation. Before COVID-19, 43.62% of patients reported at least one symptom of chronic fatigue. Within 4, 4-12, and > 12 weeks after COVID-19, the prevalence of chronic fatigue was 76.96%, 75.49%, and 66.17%, respectively (all p < 0.001). The frequency of chronic fatigue symptoms decreased within > 12 weeks following the onset of infection but did not return to baseline values, except for self-reported lymph node enlargement. In a multivariable linear regression model, the number of fatigue symptoms was predicted by female sex [ß 0.25 (0.12; 0.39), p < 0.001 and 0.26 (0.13; 0.39), p < 0.001 for weeks 0-12 and > 12, respectively], and age [for < 4 weeks, ß -0.12 (-0.28; -0.01), p = 0.029]. CONCLUSIONS: Most patients previously hospitalised due to COVID-19 suffer from fatigue > 12 weeks after infection onset. The presence of fatigue is predicted by female sex and - only for the acute phase - age.

BACKGROUND: In December 2019, coronavirus disease 2019 spread worldwide, causing acute respiratory distress syndrome. Coronavirus disease 2019 presents from an asymptomatic infection to severe disease causing multiorgan failure. Neurological manifestations were observed in some patients, including intracerebral hemorrhage. Bilateral basal ganglia hemorrhage is rare due to trauma. CASE PRESENTATION: Our patient was a 14-year-old Iranian boy with multiple trauma and loss of consciousness who tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019. The brain computed tomography scan reported bilateral basal ganglia hemorrhage. Bilateral ground glass opacity was reported through a chest computed tomography scan. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we reported a 14-year-old boy referred to the emergency room due to multiple trauma. Through the medical interventions, bilateral basal ganglia hemorrhage was discovered incidentally. Coronavirus disease 2019 was detected in this patient on the basis of findings in chest computed tomography scan and positive real reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction test. Several clinical reports and series exploring the relationship between coronavirus disease 2019 and ischemic strokes have been published. Coronavirus disease 2019, like other acute respiratory syndromes, can invade the central nervous system through hematogenous and neuronal dissemination or it can be an immune response to the cytokine storm. In conclusion, it is vital to know the pathophysiology of the neurological manifestations of coronavirus disease 2019 and prevent the mild neurological manifestations leading to severe conditions.

BACKGROUND: Headache is the most common COVID-19-related neurological symptom. We investigated the characteristics of COVID-19-related headache and their relationship with clinical severity in Kirsehir Province, Turkey. METHODS: This cross-sectional study prospectively enrolled 226 COVID-19-positive patients who developed headache during acute infection. Demographic data, headache characteristics, and infection symptoms were recorded. The clinical severity of COVID-19 was documented in each participant. RESULT: New-onset COVID-19-related headaches lasting 4 days were reported in 164 patients (72.5 %); these were mostly bilaterally or localized to the forehead (58.4 %), pulsating (42.5 %), moderate to severe intensity (30.1 %), with a partial response to paracetamol (23.5 %). The other 62 patients (27.4 %) reported headaches before COVID-19. Their COVID-related headaches were fiery type (p = 0.025), of very severe intensity (p = 0.008), had a holocranial distribution (p = 0.004), and were less response to paracetamol (p = 0.003); the headaches were significantly more frequent after COVID-19 than before COVID-19. Older age, high body mass index, and low education level were significantly higher in the severe group (all p < 0.001). Female sex (p = 0.019) and being a healthcare worker (p < 0.001) were significantly more frequent in mild cases. CONCLUSIONS: Bilateral, prolonged, moderate to severe headaches that were analgesic resistant are more frequent in patients with COVID-19 infection. Further study should examine whether the headache characteristics distinguish COVID-19-related headaches from other types, particularly in asymptomatic subjects.

ABSTRACT

Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) associated with COVID-19 first reported from South East London has a wide spectrum of neurological signs and symptoms including headache, impaired consciousness, aseptic meningitis, encephalitis, seizure, ataxia, and stroke. It is important to diagnose these patients as soon as possible and treat them with a multidisciplinary ap-proach. A few studies have reported post-discharge follow-up data in MIS-C patients with neurological symptoms most of whom showed neurological improvement. ABSTRACT

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic that started in late 2019, has posed a great health challenge to India rapidly elevating our country to the second most affected nation after the United States. While the respiratory manifestations of COVID-19 are widely-known, there is paucity of information on its neurological manifestations in Indian literature. The imaging features of the diverse neurological presentations such as stroke, encephalitis, demyelination, hemorrhages and vascular involvement are reviewed in this article. Objective of the review is to discuss the spectrum of neuroimaging features in COVID-19. Method(s): Multiple publications from systematic and cohort studies on neuroimaging are reviewed in this article. Due permission was obtained from the publishers to reproduce the illustrations because of lack of adequate neuroimaging data in our country. Result(s): Ischemic infarcts, micro-hemorrhages, parenchymal hematomas and white matter changes, both diffuse and focal were the most common manifestations. Acute necrotizing hemorrhagic encephalitis, features resembling posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) and acute demyelinating encephalomyelitis (ADEM), arterial dissections, dural sinus and deep venous thrombosis were reported. Olfactory bulb and white matter signal ratios were elevated in anosmic patients. Micro-structural changes such as remyelination and neurogenesis indicated processes of repair. Conclusion(s): Ischemic and hemorrhagic lesions are the most common neuroimaging abnormalities in COVID-19 patients, though 40% of the studies are normal. Awareness of the imaging features is essential for management of these patients in the current pandemic. Severity of illness and risk of spread of infection are major constraints for neuroimaging. ABSTRACT

A novel coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was first identified in December 2019 in Wuhan, China. The new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) in March 2020. SARS-CoV-2 can invade the nervous system aside from infecting the respiratory system as its primary target. The most common nervous system symptoms of COVID-19 are stated as headache, myalgia, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, sudden and unexplained anosmia, and ageusia. More severe conditions such as encephalomyelitis, acute myelitis, thromboembolic events, ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, Guillain-Barré-syndrome, Bell's palsy, rhabdomyolysis, and even coma have also been reported. Cohort studies revealed that neurological findings are associated with higher morbidity and mortality. The neurological symptoms and manifestations caused by SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19 are examined and summarized in this article.

ABSTRACT

Background: Though severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS CoV 2) virus primarily affects respiratory system, neurological involvement is well known. Aims: To describe the neurological manifestations of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) during three waves of the pandemic. Methodology: This was an ambispective observational single-centre study to describe the neurological manifestations of COVID-19 infection among inpatients from a tertiary care referral centre in Western India from March 2020 to January 2022. Results: Out of 14,822 patients admitted with COVID-19, 307 (2.07%) had neurological manifestations. Neurological manifestations were seen in 1.87% in first wave (onset to 10 Feb 21); 2.37% in second wave (Feb 11, 2021 to Dec 31, 2021) and 6.26% in third wave (Jan 1, 2022 to Jan 31, 2022). The most common neurological manifestations were encephalopathy (34.5%), ischemic stroke (32.1%), and acute symptomatic seizures (8.8%). Encephalopathy (p = 0.028) was more common in first wave while seizures were more common in third wave (p = 0.001). In patients with encephalopathy, hypoxia (p = 0.0001), shock (p = 0.001), renal involvement (p = 0.002), and sepsis (p = 0.033) were associated with higher mortality; while those with no systemic involvement had better survival (p = 0.0001). Among patients with ischemic stroke, 32.1% did not have any traditional vascular risk factors. These patients were 9 years younger and required 6 days less hospitalization than patients of stroke with vascular risk factors. Conclusion: SARS-CoV-2 produces many central and peripheral nervous system manifestations. Encephalopathy was more common in first wave while acute symptomatic seizures were more common in third wave. Encephalopathy was most common neurological manifestation with progressively higher mortality with increased number of systemic comorbidities. Ischemic stroke was seen in patients who had vascular risk factors as well as in patients without them.

ABSTRACT

In this case series of two male and one female patient with an age range of 2-12 years, only one patient had a history of neurological disorder and underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunt for a medulloblastoma, which describes coronavirus disease-associated neurological manifestations in pediatric patients, among which seizures and sensory disturbances are noticeable. In order to describe the various clinical and neurological manifestations that appeared earlier or developed over the course of illness, a series of cases of pediatric patients with coronavirus disease was documented.
